Fort Sumter National Monument
On April 12, 1861 from nearby Fort Johnson South Carolina troops of the newly formed Confederacy fired on the Fort which was occupied by Union Troops.  Within two days Union troops withdrew and the South held the fort until it was evacuated on February 17, 1865.  During that time Fort Sumter was bombarded with 46,000 shells, estimated at over 7 million pounds of metal.  Today the Fort is a National Monument administered by the National Park Service.
